What to Expect At Stand Up 4 Grain Safety Week 2022

This year Stand Up 4 Grain Safety Week was held from April 4-8, 2022, with live, virtual, and on-demand sessions covering safety best practices and protective equipment for grain handling.

This annual event is a collaborative effort to raise safety awareness within the industry and remind organizations that a small change can make a big impact.

Grain handling is a high-hazard industry, and each day, workers face many potentially dangerous situations. From grain dust explosions and entrapment in grain bins to falls from heights and limb injuries from grain handling equipment—the list goes on—but, for every hazard, there is a preventive practice that you can adopt.

We’re proud to support the Grain Handling Safety Coalition, dedicated to preventing accidents in grain handling operations. Its mission is to promote vital grain safety awareness and supportive resources for workers and stakeholders in the grain handling industry.

Arnco Safety proudly supported Stand Up 4 Grain Safety Week 2022

Stand Up 4 Grain Safety 2022 was a week of daily webinars for anyone related to the grain handling industry. It’s a great opportunity to renew your commitment to safety at the workplace.

Let’s take a deep dive at what the week’s schedule covered:

  • April 4, 2022: Virtual Kick-Off Event

The first day focused on safety around grain structures and safety equipment, including live, on-site safety demonstrations at the Eastern Nebraska Research and Extension Center (ENREC), an “Ask the Expert” live discussion and much more.

  • APRIL 5, 2022: Electrical Safety

There were 2,346 workplace electrical injuries recorded in the grain handling industry in 2020, and over 5% proved fatal. In the Electrical Safety virtual training, viewers learned to identify and mitigate common electrical hazards associated with grain handling and storage. Couldn’t make it? Arnco Safety conducts customized safety training sessions for grain handling workers.

  • APRIL 6, 2022: Heat/Cold Stress & Extreme Weather Events

This session discussed the hazards posed by extreme weather and strategies to protect grain handling workers. Be sure to also review these Heat/Cold safety tips provided by NGFA. In addition, Arnco Safety offers customized safety policy consulting services to meet OSHA requirements, including injury and illness recordkeeping, first aid, protection equipment, and more.

  • APRIL 7, 2022: Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

PPE is often the last or only line of defense against workplace hazards. This virtual session demonstrated the proper way to wear PPE, with tips to encourage workers to remember their PPE. If you need to order high-quality PPE for your team, take a look at the wide range of PPE we provide: TimberlandPro protective footwear, Pyramex Safety Glasses, Ridgeline hard hats, face shields, insulated gloves, high-visibility vests, and welding protective helmets.

  • APRIL 8, 2022: STFs, Crush, Struck-By Hazards

This module discussed hazards for slip/trip/fall injuries, crush injuries, or struck-by injuries. Also, an on-demand, self-guided, online tutorial was available for front-line workers, supervisors, and managers to learn about hazards frequently associated with slips, trips, and falls. Take your commitment to safety a step further by requesting a customized Emergency Action Plan from Arnco Safety and establish critical safety policies for your teams to follow for using hand and power tools, overhead and gantry cranes, ladder safety, fall protection, and more.

Are You Ready To Stand Up For Grain Safety?

Take the first step to identify potential hazards, develop a safety plan and educate workers about safety best practices to ensure a safe work environment. Grain handling industry accidents are largely preventable if you invest in the appropriate safety equipment, worker training, and education.

You can visit www.standup4grainsafety.org to learn how your colleagues can participate in this initiative and make the grain handling industry accident-free.

OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) provides workers, employers, and safety and health professionals with useful, up-to-date safety information on grain handling facilities. Share the OSHA Seven Steps to Grain Safety brochure with your colleagues to do your bit to promote grain handling safety best practices. Also, use the hashtag #StandUp4GrainSafety with social posts on how you are pledging to improve safety for grain handling workers.
